The German National Cohort is the largest prospective study ever conducted in Germany. Internationally, it ranks among the most comprehensive trials of its kind. What are the causes of cancer and cardiovascular diseases? How does lifestyle impact the risk for diabetes? Why does skin age? Which environmental influences compromise pulmonary function? To answer these elementary health research questions 200,000 randomly selected adults aged between 20 and 69 will be subjected to medical examination and the occurrence of diseases will be observed over a period of up to 20 years. The study is expected to produce meaningful data that will help to identify risk factors of the most common diseases and significantly improve early diagnosis, the preventative measures and treatment strategies. 18 studies centres all over Germany are involved in the German National Cohort. Four members of the LRA Healthy Ageing in three study centres (Düsseldorf, Bremen, Berlin-Süd/Brandenburg) are participating in the German National Cohort.
