Leibniz Graduate Schools

In 2006, the Leibniz Association embarked on the systematic promotion of junior researchers by establishing Leibniz Graduate Schools. Young researchers are given the opportunity to do their doctorates in an excellent, collaborative, cross-disciplinary research environment. To this end, Leibniz institutions cooperate closely with universities.

Junior researchers benefit from ideal conditions for their doctorates

  • by participating in a structured doctoral programme either at the Leibniz institution or at a partner university
  • by completing the doctorate quickly (three years maximum) aided by intensive, small-group supervision by Leibniz researchers and university professors
  • by gaining access to international networks and conferences

As every Leibniz institution focuses on clearly defined, socially-relevant themes, doctoral candidates have a wealth of networking opportunities in a large, dedicated scientific community.

The particular character of research at the institutions in the Leibniz Association, which includes fundamental, large-scale and application-oriented research, means doctoral candidates can usually conduct research from basic idea right through to application.
